More awards for The Office, is the show overrated?
I was listening to a podcast via TV Guide a few days ago and one of the personalities there mentioned The Office in passing, saying that it was an overrated TV show. I really may have been cooped into my little own box the last couple of years because it never occurred to me to consider the show as overrated. To my mind, it deserved every bit of award and recognition it gets. And when I hear people say it’s the one of the funniest shows on TV today, I’d most likely get on board with it.
How is the series funny? I think it has something to do with the way the show works around jokes based on a presented scenario. The Office relies on cringe-worthy situations, which in real life may not actually be funny; but when seen played out on TV, anyone will most likely have empathy for it. It’s the same feeling I get when I’m watching Larry David on Curb Your Enthusiasm. For me, the adage: “Everything is funny as long as its happening to someone else,” rings true for this kind of humor on TV. I recognize the character in the situation, I think I know what that character feels, agreeing or disagreeing with how the situation is handled. But I’m glad that it’s not happening to me… so therefore I can simply find something funny in it.
And that’s what other viewers may not get about this show. But I don’t blame them. The Office is a series that you need invest on to fully appreciate the magnificence of it. Watching one or five episodes will not do.
Incidentally, speaking of awards and recognitions, TV Guide’s Online Video Awards has recently bestowed three distinctions to The Office with these achievements:
- TV Comedy Webisodes:The Office
- Best Extras: The Office: Fake PSAs
- Web Actor: Steve Carell
Congratulations!
