Oscar Nunez to Star in Comedy Central’s “Halfway Home”

As I watch the reserved, quiet Oscar from The Office, I find it kind of interesting to learn of his new project, Halfway Home, which premieres on March 14th on Comedy Central. The show takes place in a halfway house where he, Oscar, and numerous other ex-convicts struggle to adjust again to the real world and rehabilitate themselves from their shady pasts.

The cast features Kevin Ruf (Fun with Dick and Jane, Groundlings member) as the house supervisor who attempts to rehabilitate the misfit parolees, including Oscar Nunez (The Office, Reno 911!) as a male prostitute who uses sex to get what he wants; Jordan Black (Punk’d, Mad TV) as a wanna-be terrorist who’s really just a rich kid from California; Regan Burns (Oblivious, The Movie Club) as the house narc who has an uncontrollable obsession with fire; Octavia Spencer (Coach Carter, Spiderman) as an armed robbery convict; and Jessica Makinson (Joe Schmo 2, Trigger Happy TV) as a drug trafficker who can’t give up her old habits.
The website for the show is also interesting. You can view videos, cast bios, oh yeah, and you can also swap prison stories on the message boards.
Anyway, Oscar Nunez produced the pilot of Halfway Home and sold it to Comedy Central. It’s not surprising that he got a lead role, it is his show afterall. On a critical standpoint, those who have already previewed some of the episodes have a few words on the
comedy style of the show. “Improvised comedy generally tends to result in big laughs, but if you’re expecting something akin to “Curb Your Enthusiasmâ€? or one of Christopher Guest’s flicks, you’re expecting a little too much; in this case, the cast tends to fall back on lowbrow comedy way too often.” This is according to Will Harris at Premium Hollywood.
Honestly, I don’t think I’ll be watching this new show. I’m not into low brow comedy at that much, I prefer something that I wouldn’t be able to hear walking down the halls of a high school or boy’s locker room.
Well, good luck Oscar.
